What a first ABA session looks like (and how to prepare your child)
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Here is what to expect.
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Here’s what to expect.
Before the visit
Your BCBA will have read the evaluation and talked with you. Have a few of your child’s favorite toys or activities nearby. Tell siblings a “helper” is coming to play.
The first 15 minutes: pairing
The therapist follows your child’s lead: no demands, just play. The goal is for your child to think, “This person is fun.”
The middle: gentle probes
Small, playful requests (a word, a point, a turn) help the therapist see where your child is right now.
The end: a chat with you
A short recap, one or two things to try, and the plan for next time.
How to help
- Keep the routine normal
- Don’t worry if your child ignores the therapist at first
- Ask questions; you’re part of the team
